Work Life Balance is tricky!

Work Life Balance is tricky!

It is very important to maintain work life balance while juggling a career, home ownership, relationships, health, and start up webcomic. But demanding as it is, I always strive to water and nurture the different elements of my life. Because I find that when I neglect any of the aforementioned elements in any way, it always negatively affects my artistic output. When my life is cluttered and disorganized, my headspace is chaotic. Consequently, this impacts my creative ideas.

I often become quite antisocial and seclusive when I get deep into my work. This is not a bad thing. Any artist can identify with me when I speak of “being in a zone” where one is super productive with their work. However, it can be a bad thing when it starts interfering with important things like your relationships, dietary intake, or exercise regimen. And I am totally guilty of this. I really have to check myself on the regular to make sure I am not missing birthdays, quality time with the spouse, eating healthy meals, cleaning the house, or going for a jog. Because sometimes I get so deep into Black Rainbow that I honestly do not care to water those aspects of my life. All I can obsessively think about is working on my art. However, failure to nurture those areas always results in beats from the wife, a cluttered living space, malnourishment, and feelings of stiffness and bloatedness from lack of physical activity. All of which ends up putting me in a less artistically productive mentality.

Consequently, I have developed a healthier way of juggling these different facets of my life through effective time management. I have come to realize that my university days of spending fifteen hours straight in a computer lab working on graphic designs have long passed. Now with responsibilities such as a wife, work, bills, and household duties, I have to find small thirty minute to five hour pockets of time within my days to funnel focused efforts into Black Rainbow. Tough at times, but such is the life of being grown I guess.
